Interesting TCC Eagle Business Society lecture

I am posting this because I know that many students at TCC have long-range plans to start their own business after they get an engineering degree and some experience working for an existing firm. If you are one of those, you might find this presentation to future business majors very helpful and interesting.

Eagle Business Society Fall Distinquished Lecture

Tuesday, November 19, 1:30 to 2:30 in the SU Ballroom

Dave Mica, Co-Chair of the Associated Industries of Florida Energy Council, will be the next featured speaker on the Eagle Business Society’s Distinguished Lecture Series at 1:30 on November 19th in the SU Ballroom.

The EBS announcement did not give a title, but did provide the following background information:

Mr. Mica has long been a role model as an advocate for industry who approaches problems with a unique vision and creative ideas. He began his career as a campaign worker for “Walkin’ Lawton” Chiles as they trekked across Florida. He has worked in both of his brothers’ successful Congressional Campaigns as well – one Democrat and one Republican. Serving as President of the University of Florida Alumni Association, Mr. Mica reflects the best characteristics of admired leaders. His ethical advocacy has contributed to Florida’s economic development and energy policy. Mentoring young leaders in the graduate class he is teaching at the University of Florida is another example of how Mr. Mica has given back to his community and state while demonstrating that one individual can make a difference. Mr. Mica will inspire our students to achieve success on their own terms – ethically, as he has done.

Mr. Mica is the Executive Director of the Florida Petroleum Council and is an advocate for further development of petroleum resources in Florida and the Keystone pipeline. (If you are not familiar with the Associated Industries of Florida, AIF, it is an umbrella organization for a large number of business lobbyists in the state of Florida with its headquarters just south of the Governor's mansion.) However, it appears from the above that he will be talking about leadership, not any political issue.

Five (plus 2) Days of Opening Minds - 2013

Jonas heard about this event from a friend at FSU and shared it at the meeting on Thursday. Rather than include it with the internship info, I think it deserves more attention than that.

Here is the link (183 kB pdf)

The big opportunity is Wednesday, September 25.
Sir Harold Kroto, winner of the Nobel Prize as a co-discoverer of C60 (better known as the Buckyball) while at Rice University, will be speaking about that discovery as an example of how a scientific discovery happens. It is VERY rare to hear someone talk about how they came up with the idea behind such an important experiment, let alone one that is revolutionizing everything from chemistry and physics to materials science (nanotubes) and medicine. I should also mention that he is a good speaker.

All programs start at 5:30 pm in the Askew Student Life Center, which you can read about here . It is east of the Leach Center and west of Parking Garage No. 2, just west of the part of Woodward Avenue that is closed to traffic. The easiest access to parking is from the south, heading up Woodward from Gaines. The entrance to the theater is on the west side of the building that faces Learning Way.

Electric Vehicles - Lunch and Learn

Put this on your calendar if you are interested in all-electric vehicles.

Topic: ASME Lunch and Learn: Electric Vehicles

I assume the talk will be about amateur conversion of regular cars to all-electric or plug-in hybrid operation because that is what members of TAEVA (Tallahassee Area Electric Vehicle Association) do.

Speaker: Andre Smith of TAEVA

When: Friday, June 26, 11:45 to about 1:15

Where: Ole Times Country Buffet

This is located on the east side of North Monroe, just north of Lake Ella and south of Tharpe Street, across the street from the Lake Ella Publix.

Details

Lunch starts between 11:45 an 12:10. I recommend getting there by 11:45. Just go in, pay your money at the register (one price for all meals at this place), then find the engineering group in one of the private dining areas. Speaker introduction and talk will be from 12:10 to 1:00 with time to inspect the cars in the parking lot before the group adjourns at 1:15 to go back to work.

I'm hoping the all-electric Miata will be there. (An article in the paper last month showed a "shade tree" conversion that replaced the engine with a bunch of DieHard batteries and an electric motor.)

Lecture Schedule for Mag Lab Open House

I got an e-mail today with the details for the special lectures that will be given in conjunction with the open house at the Magnet Lab on Saturday. Click the picture to see a bigger version.

The open house runs from 10 AM to 3 PM on Saturday, February 23. These are the only events that have a specific schedule. Everything else is self-guided with small presentations taking place every 15 to 30 minutes at various locations along the tour.

Letter from Susan Ray @ MagLab

Mr. Jones,

Just wanted to make sure the TCC Engineering Club is aware that the Mag Lab Open House is coming up – Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. I think this would be of great interest to the students. You can find out more here: http://www.magnet.fsu.edu/education/community/openhouse.html

In addition to the self-guided tour and demonstrations, there also will be talks this year, two by engineers.

I’d appreciate it greatly if you could forward this to Aaron so he can mention it at the upcoming club meeting. If any of the students is interested in volunteering, they can contact me directly.

Thanks!

Friday ASME Luncheon

TCC students are invited to attend the ASME "senior section" luncheon at 11:30 on Friday, 30 November, at the Ole Times Buffet on North Monroe, across from Lake Ella. If you leave before the question period, you can be back in time for the 1:25 calculus classes. Doug Jones says that you can't be late for his calc III class if you leave the meeting at the same time he does. (I say this is because he drives slowly.) Click on the flyer for details.

This promises to be a very interesting presentation. The City of Tallahassee is replacing the old gas- or oil-fired boiler with a "combined cycle" system that uses a gas turbine (jet engine) to generate electricity and then uses the waste heat from its exhaust to produce steam that will generate even more electricity. This is described on page 315 of the PHY2048 textbook in Example 19.2 and the Application at the bottom of the page. Read that before going to the lecture and you will really get a lot out of the talk.

You will also get a chance to eat lunch with local professional mechanical engineers and faculty and students from FAMU and FSU who attend these talks.

Lecture on 19 July about X-ray Observatory

I recently got an e-mail announcing a lecture at the Challenger Learning Center in downtown Tallahassee (on Kleman Plaza) about "X-ray Astrophysics and the Chandra X-ray Observatory". The one hour lecture is at 1:00 pm on Thursday, July 19. There is convenient parking in the Kleman Plaza ramp, and sometimes at the meters along Park Avenue a few blocks north.

Click on the image at right to read the full announcement and details about the lecture. These NASA touring lectures are usually well prepared and understandable to the general public, so I would not expect an overly technical talk until the questions at the end.

This "observatory" is a spacecraft (launched from the Space Shuttle) carrying a very sophisticated X-ray telescope. It has been used to study black holes (including the one at the center of our galaxy), supernovae, and to provide evidence of the existence of dark matter. Because x rays would rather go through something than reflect off of it, designing an x-ray mirror and the associated "optics" was a major accomplishment that will probably be discussed in the talk.

You can read more about this device on the NASA web site and the one for the Harvard-based facility that operates it, among others.
